trip photos

Painted Cross (medieval and renaissance gallery)

This beautiful cross painting was painted by Antonio de Saliba in Italy. The reason why I picked this one was due to the detail of the painting of the cross and the time and effort it must have took to paint it.

Incense Burner (Japan gallery)
Created by Japanese artist Suzuki Chokichi and displayed at the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition, this metallic sculpture (like the painted cross) goes into beautiful detail for the features of it.
Mao Zedong tunic/propaganda poster (China gallery)

Woren by former Chinese dictator Mao Zedong and with a propaganda poster by its side shows a world that once was.

Buddha (Buhddism gallery)
These statues symbolize the importance of the Buddha and by making these statues represent that.

Islamic art (Islamic Middle East gallery)
This artwork showcases the best art from the ancient middle east.

Cameras (photography gallery)

This collection of old-fashioned cameras through the ages show what they once looked like, and how far we've come with them.

Leaflet research/analysis
The target audience is for those who want to go to the Thanet Coastsal Path, and what they can explore while there. It also contains lots of information and some images of what to expect when there. Three pages are used to fold it together. The main colours are green and white. It also goes into detail about the history of the place and what you can do there.

To create my warm-up mug poster, I looked at other advertising posters and seen what I could do to make my advertising poster eye-catching. The posters below gave me some ideas on how my poster should look, and feel like.

Examples of
advertising posters:

March of
the Penguins

The sub-genre of this documentary is nature/science.

The conventions of a documentary that it uses include:

*A narrator

*Footage of what is going on

The mode that the  documentary is used is the expository documentary mode.

Overall the documentary made me feel intrigued and even sad at times. It was interesting to see their journey from one part of the Arctic to the other. However, there were a lot of sad moments as well, such as one of the penguins getting attacked by a sea lion, or the parents abandoning their children at the end.

My FMP project

-What are reflections?
-Reflections can mean many different things. For example, it could mean the mirroring of objects on a very shiny surface. Or looking back on what happened in your lifetime, and thinking about it.

-What am I doing with reflections for my final major project (FMP)?
-I am making posters with them being revolved around reflection.

-What software will I be using to make my posters?
-I will be using Adobe InDesgin to create them.

An example of a reflection poster that I did:

Documentary Codes
and Conventions

*Voice-over narration: To provide context and commentary.

*Interviews: Talking heads and interviews offering firsthand accounts and expertise.

* Archival footage: Connecting the subject to historical events. Direct cinema techniques: such as handheld camera work, create an impression of immediacy.

Elements that make a good poster

*The content of a poster should be easy to understand, to get your message across.

*A good layout and typography

*Be well organised and well-constructed

*Be clear and concise

*Have an appropriate amount of text and graphics

30.4.24

I used Adobe InDesgin to create this leaflet, and used lorem ipsum for the text as a placeholder.

3.5.24

I used Adobe InDesgin to create my advert poster based on my product. I used the pencil tool to create the steam coming out of the mug.

I aslo used Adobe InDesgin to create this poster as well.

Different styles of posters

Victorian Style

The printing press had been developed during the industrial revolution. and suddenly consumer products had became a part of everyday life.

The posters of this era (usually) had excessive decoration which reflected the time. The posters were carefully constructed in architectural layouts. They were often tall and slim, with clear lettering and illustrative frames. Font styles were angular and heavy, but with ornaments that made them fit with any imagery in a strict, coherent way.

Art Deco

Art Deco is a desgin of visual arts and architecture which came to prominence as a symbol of luxury, wealth and sophistication in challenge to the austere influence of the first world one. The name was taken from a 1925 exhibition in Paris was called ‘Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes’, which was the first to feature works of this style. It later became a popular form of advertising of it's time. and even to this day. It was (and in some ways still is) used mainly in luxury brands, fashion labels and far flung travel destinations advert posters.

The characteristics of this design include bold curves, strong vertical lines, capitalised type, rich contrasting colours, aerodynamic forms, airbrushing, motion lines and the geometric treatment of patterns and surface.

American Kitsch

After Art Deco came a new art style that arose in the 1940s and lasted well into the 1960s in the United States of America, with an idealised, cartoon-like illustrative style. American kitsch designs of this era were known for their particular font styles and a futuristic stylisation with dramatised or caricatured imagery.

The graphic design is mostly synonymous with informal shapes, rich and high contrasting colour use, hand drawn and coloured illustrations, space-age forms and dramatic curves.

Swiss/International

Originating in Switzerland in the 1940s, Swiss style design has concurrently been referred to as the International Typographic Style or the International Style. It was hugley influetnial and grew throughout the 20th century. Favouring objectivity, simplicity and legibility, this design style was initiated and led by the designers of the Zurich School of Arts and Krafts and the Basel School of Design.

Minimalist and flat posters

Minimalist and flat designs are a current graphic design style, which first started to gain popularity back in the 2010s. It's style is easily recognisable for its limited approach towards colour use, minimal shading, bold line work, strict adherence to grids, crisp photographic images, simplified linear illustrations and a preference for sans serif typefaces.

3-Dimensional

This style is highly popular across a range of designed spaces, though particularly amongst gaming, online and digital brands. While characters, logos and online content are all designed with a 3-dimensional view in mind, so too are the simple appearance of skeuomorphic elements such as buttons, icons and other interactive features. These seemingly simple design elements are often highly considered and are in turn given a more weighted and lifelike appearance with a few simple 3-dimensional additions. A perfect example would be to turn on your phone and look at the Google suite icons. With just a few indications of depth and light, many of these icon illustrations are given a 3-dimensionality. Most app icons maintain skeuomorphic elements, meaning the imagery has been designed to mimic the weighting and lighting of the original 3-dimensional object they replicate.

Different types of posters

Educational

Education-type posters are often used for academic purposes, and tend to be seen in schools. They may provide common reference, like the periodic table of the elements, or supply information about any new research work.

Political

Posters with political goals have been in use longer than most. Powerful and influential designs called for citizens to respond to a call. During the wars, with the help of poster printing London, the UK government successfully distributed patriotic posters to gather hundreds and thousands of troops.

Social

Social posters are mainly used for raising awareness about current issues and calling for action. Such posters are often seen in social development organizations or activism demonstrations.

Advertising
Since the 20th century, we have witnessed some remarkable advertisements. They promote anything you can put a price on: consumables like food and beverages; longer-lasting tangible products like radios, vehicles, toys, and more; and events ranging from as grand as a World’s Fair to as casual as a pub trivia night. Some ads were so outstanding that people still can recall decades-old campaigns from memory. For several generations past, the advertising posters were sent out with newspapers, magazines, and hung around cities.

Campagin
A campaign, by definition, is a series of similar activities and promotions with a common theme and a set goal. Perhaps the prime example of campaigning occurs during elections for public office. Each candidate runs on a particular platform, and those values and the associated promotional material is referred to as a campagin.

Event

Event posters are published to inform the audience about upcoming occurrences like theatrical performances, concerts, fairs, sports matches, fundraisers, ect.

Movie
For as long as films have been around, posters have been around to advertise them. Today, the technique remains useful and effective. The poster design informs people of a particular film's release while giving an intriguing, insightful preview, to what it will be about.

13.5.24

What do these posters have in common
with my work?

I picked these posters as I felt that they are important to how I should do my posters. They each have unique fonts that I felt that I should use in my own posters. I also felt that each of their desgins are intresting and delving into what each one is, and what they represent. For example the Art Deco Iron Man poster uses a yellow font against a black background, and Iron man's suit colours are quite bright in contrast to a more darker backdrop.  This makes it interesting as it gives a contrast to one side to another side. The colours of Iron Man's suit reflect the goodness and his heroic actions, while the darkness of the city represents the problems that it is suffering under that Iron Man must combat to get rid of them. I feel that it's the sort of imagery that I want to convey in my own posters but with my reflections as part of my FMP (final major project).

14.5.24

How do I plan to use these poster
types and desgins, as my own?

I plan to use these poster desgins as blueprints for my very own posters. I feel that if I have a more diverse array of posters, based on the theme of reflection. I would for example try to use the style of Art Deco for one of my posters.

What was my process for
creating my posters?

I used primarly Adobe InDesgin to create and desgin (no pun intended) them. I picked diffrent images of what I felt perfectly showed off reflection. Some of these images included a man looking into a mirror, a tree in water, and even a large metallic sculpture. I also used qoutes related to reflection to go with them as I felt that they fitted in perfectly in my posters. I also used my own product that I created some time ago to futher practice my poster making skills.

16.4.24

Making a poster
with my own photos

I plan to take a photo for an upcoming poster of mine. For my own photo I'm thinking of taking a photo of  leaves in a glass of water. I feel that it would link perfectly to what I'am doing for my theme of reflection for my posters. To create my poster with my photo would most likely be Adobe InDesgin, how ever I could also use Adobe Photoshop to make it. Just like my pervious reflection posters, I will (most likely) add a quote with a connection to refelection to my poster. I plan to take a photo later today, and than create the poster tomorrow.

(An idea of what the photo for my poster could look like)

What will my poster look like?

For my desgin for my poster I plan to have the title of the poster above the image of the leaves. As I mentioned before I will than have my photo below my title, and underneath it would be my reflection qoute.

17.5.24

My FMP
test poster

This poster is part of my development of my final reflection poster for my FMP. I decided to experiment by taking a photo of a random item in my household that I felt linked to the theme of reflection, so I decided to choose my kettle. The leaves in the glass however will be saved as the best for the last! I also plan to make another poster based on the kettle but with a slight twist to it! I see this particualar poster as more of a protoype, and having it evolve so that it can help influence my final poster which has the leaves in the glass of water.

This is the second part of my kettle reflection poster. However, I have removed all the colour and instead turned it black and white. I took a screenshot of the original kettle poster and put it on Adobe Photoshop, I than used the grayscale feature to turn it black and white. I than saved it and took a screenshot of it and putted it on Adobe InDesgin to write the title and quote on it. I also decided to make the quote bigger to make it more visible, and the text white so that it can also be visible and to nicily contrast it with the more darker colour of the poster.

20.5.24

I will be using this image to create my poster. I took this photo using my phone, and took the grass from my garden, and poured water from the tap. I also took the photo in my kitchen. I decided to put grass in the glass of water to make it look more artistic.

I used Adobe Indesgin to make this poster. I also took the liberty to have the two reflections on diffrent sides to have it futher represent the theme of reflection. I aslo croped this image so that it could fit in the style of a traditional poster. The free transform tool also helped me to move the reflections text box, so that it could be seen as a mirror. The quote that I included feels close the theme of reflection.

To make it black and white I used Adobe Photoshop, and with it the grayscale tool to give it it's black and white colour, similarly which I did with the one with the kettle. I also made the "reflections" text on the right, and the quote on the bottom white, in order for it to contrast with the darker colours that they are on. I also compressed this image so that it could fit in much better.

21.5.24

This poster is the same one that I did yesterday but I took the photo from a birdseye view angle, as I felt that it would make it more unique. I also put the reflection text boxes in diffrent parts of the poster to futher emphasise the theme of reflection. The title is done in the bauhaus 93 font, and the bottom quote is in the OCR A extended font. The text is white so that it can contrast with the darker background.

I made my poster black and white in photoshop using the grayscale tool. Similarly to what I did with my previous posters with my own posters that I did before.
